Yang Chen-Ning, a world-renowned physicist and Nobel laureate, passed away in Beijing on Saturday at 103.

Yang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor at Tsinghua University, and the honorary president of the Institute for Advanced Study at Tsinghua, died after an illness, the university said in an obituary.

杨先生离开的时候一定很欣慰。他的一生，为民族的复兴，国家的强盛，人类的进步交出了一份满意的答卷。

杨先生在他快满九十岁的时候写下这样一首诗，我把它翻译成中文如下：

Mr Yang must have left with contentment. Throughout his life, he presented a deeply fulfilling answer — to the nation's rejuvenation, the country's prosperity, and the progress of humanity.

As Mr Yang approached his ninetieth birthday, he wrote a poem titled 'On Reaching Age Ninety', which I have translated into Chinese. It reads:

On Reaching Age Ninety

九十抒怀

Mine has been

我的一生是

A promising life, fully fulfilled,

沐光而行的一生，

如斯如愿；

A dedicated life, with purpose and principle,

理想奉献的一生，

不屈不折；

A happy life, with no remorse or resentment,

幸福圆满的一生，

无怨无悔。

And a long life……

福寿绵长……

Traversed in deep gratitude.

深深地感恩。

是的，他的一生，是有理想，有奋斗，有责任，有担当，有幸福，有感恩的一生。有他多年的陪伴，我何其有幸！

就如《小王子》所讲的，我相信，每当夜晚我们仰望星空时，杨先生会在其中的一颗星星上面，对着我们微笑。我们永远可以从他那里找到自强不息、厚德载物的力量。

Yes, his life was one of ideals and struggle, of responsibility and commitment, of happiness and gratitude. How fortunate I have been to share so many years by his side.

As expressed inThe Little Prince, I believe that whenever we gaze at the starry sky at night, Mr Yang will be smiling down at us from one of those stars. In him, we can always find the strength to strive tirelessly and embrace the world with profound virtue.
